Nothing To Prove

We have nothing to prove.  We’ve revolutionized the hair and beauty industries.  The Hair Care aisles in major department stores adapted to our natural hair needs. We helped create YouTube stars. We discovered new curl patterns and re-defined hair types. We proved to ourselves and the world that whether we wear our hair blown out, curly, kinky, short, long, with weave or extensions, it’s our hair. It’s our choice. And it’s beautiful!

Natural Hair Week In Review

After I applied concealer above my eyebrows for the first time and watched my eyes magically look younger, I shared my take on #blackgirlmagic with my teenage daughter.

Make up does magic.  Black girls don’t.  African American women are courageous, intelligent, beautiful, vibrant and hard working.  I explained to my daughter that our unique qualities are God-given and not magically based.

Bring The Heat #TheChicNatural

On the day that I had almost made up my mind to stop listening to love songs and refrain from watching movies about falling in love, Lady Sing the Blues and Jason’s Lyrics showed up on my TV, just as the Falcons were getting beat in the fourth quarter.

Regardless of my feelings, I couldn’t pass up one of the greatest urban love stories of all times, so I watched Jason’s Lyrics, smiling at the love making scenes, tearing up as Jason washed Lyric’s feet and reciting the poem along with Marti:

“Come live with me, and be my love,
And we will some new pleasures prove
Of golden sands, and crystal brooks,
With silken lines, and silver hooks.”

“Lord, mom,” my daughter said to me, interrupting my recitation.

By the time Jason picked up Lyric on the bus for their date, I had completely changed my mind.

Why not listen to more love songs? So what if I listen to Musiq Soulchild’s love songs over and over. Love and Basketball? Mahogany? 500 Days of Summer?…Bring it on!! I’ve got some loooooove protection…”Love…it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves.” And it never dies!

This season, if we decide to straighten our natural hair, we don’t have to fear heat damage. The ChicNatural shows us how to use a heat protectant to transform our hair safely to a straight, beautiful and natural look. So if you have been thinking about it, I say Bring the heat! Happy transformation!
